When Emma’s mother, the school counselor, asks Emma and her best friend, Scarlett, to be extra nice to MaryAnn, the two girls are less than excited. MaryAnn wears clothes that are tattered and dirty, and sometimes, she doesn’t smell very good. Then, MaryAnn comes to school with an injured arm, and Emma and Scarlett discover that she is hiding tragic secrets…secrets she makes them promise not to tell. Should they keep a promise or get help for MaryAnn? To make matters worse, the girls must protect MaryAnn from Casey Rosaline, the school bully, who is determined to sabotage their math project and broadcast MaryAnn’s secrets. More problems arise when Emma develops a close friendship with Martin Dempsey, the troubled new boy in school, who also has tragic secrets. He confides in Emma and asks her not to tell Scarlett and MaryAnn. Forgiveness, loyalty, and grace are stretched to the breaking point. Can their friendship survive?
